Del. Anne Kaiser of Montgomery County will take over as chair of the Maryland House Ways and Means Committee, which is responsible for legislation related to horse racing in the state.
House Speaker Michael Busch recently announced the appointment of Kaiser, who has served on the Ways and Means Committee since 2003. As Democratic Majority Leader of the House of Delegates, Kaiser has been close adviser to Busch.
“Delegate Kaiser has been a tireless champion for public education,” Busch said in a release. “She is well-respected by her colleagues of both parties in the House and will do a tremendous job as chairman of the committee.”
Del. Sheila Hixson, who has served as committee chair, is now Chairman Emeritus. Also a Montgomery County Democrat, Hixson will assist Busch with leadership responsibilities, according to the release.
Del. C. William Frick, a Montgomery County Democrat, will take over from Kaiser as Majority Leader.
Hixson has been a longtime advocate for and supporter of horse racing and was instrumental in marshaling legislation vital to the industry. Racing stakeholders also have worked with Kaiser on important matters for more than a decade.
The MTHA said it looks forward to working with Kaiser and values her advocacy on the industry’s behalf.
