The Maryland Racing Commission Oct. 28 approved the state's three Thoroughbred tracks for 175 racing programs in 2022.
In addition, Fair Hill requested and was awarded three dates: May 30, Memorial Day, for its annual steeplechase meet, and two dates to be named later. The facility earlier expressed interest in have some flat racing in the fall.
Laurel Park and Pimlico Race Course, both operated by the Maryland Jockey Club, were awarded 147 and 21 race dates, respectively, for a total of 168. The Maryland State Fair at Timonium was approved for its usual seven days of live racing.
Pending any changes, the Laurel winter meet will run from Jan. 1-March 27 with racing on Friday, Saturday and Sunday plus Monday, Feb. 21. For the spring meet, from April 1-May 8, racing will be offer Thursday through Sunday with no racing Sunday, April 17, for Easter.
The summer meet at Laurel will span June 1-July 31 with racing on a Friday-through-Sunday schedule. The Laurel fall meet begins Sept. 9 and concludes Dec. 31 with racing three days a week--Friday, Saturday and Sunday--in September and December and four days a week--Thursday through Sunday--in October and November. There will be no racing Dec. 24-25 but Monday, Dec. 26, has been added.
Pimlico will race 12 days in May and nine days in August. The Preakness meet will feature racing May 12-15 (Thursday through Sunday), May 19-21 (Thursday through Saturday, which is Preakness Day), and May 26-31 (Thursday through Monday, Memorial Day). From Aug. 5-21, Pimlico will race Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
The Timonium meet runs from Aug. 26-Sept. 5 with racing Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays plus Labor Day Monday.
The MRC at the meeting also approved satellite simulcast permits for the tracks and the state's nine off-track betting outlets.
