Virtual sign-ups for the Maryland Backstretch Pension Plan are necessary this year because of ongoing physical distancing issued by state government officials because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The virtual signups began a few weeks ago, and please remember to sign up as soon as possible to ensure you are eligible this year. The deadline is July 1.
Anyone employed in the care of horses on the backstretch, including trainers, are eligible to participate in the program. However, the employee must have worked a minimum of 1,000 hours during the specified year in Maryland and provide documentation to that effect.
Benefits become available at the age of 65, or at age 55 with 25 years of service. The MTHA Board earlier this year reaffirmed its support for the Backstretch Pension Program when it approved an increase in pension funding to $900,000 from $750,000.
The online form is available here. It is encouraged that as many applicants as possible use the online registration method.
You must submit a Form W2, Form 1099 or a tax return documenting the earnings reported on the registration form.
Other options are:
- Drop a copy of the text documents in one of the secure drop-boxes labeled Pension Document Drop-off at the stable gates at Laurel Park and Pimlico Race Course.
- Text a photo of your tax documents to (443) 805-1995.
- Call the MTHA office at 410-902-6844 to arrange drop-off or mailing of documents. The address to mail is MTHA, 500 Redland Court, Suite 105, Owings Mills, MD 21117.
