Almost $7 million in stakes purses will be up for grabs in Maryland from Oct. 1 through Dec. 26 under the fourth-quarter schedule released by the Maryland Jockey Club.
The schedule includes $2.7 million in purses for Oct. 3, Preakness Stakes Day, when there will be 12 stakes including the $1 million, Grade I Preakness and $250,000, Grade II Black-eyed Susan Stakes. (The $100,000 purse for the President of the UAE Cup Arabian stakes does not come from the Maryland Purse Account.) The six-day Pimlico meet will be held Sept. 24-26 and Oct. 1-3.
Three stakes worth a total of $400,000 are scheduled for Oct. 1, followed by the $400,000 “Claiming Crown Preview” and $250,000, Grade 3 Pimlico Special.
On Oct. 9, after racing returns to Laurel Park, there will be five Virginia-bred stakes that needed to be rescheduled after Colonial Downs had to end its meet prematurely because of COVID-19. The $315,000 in total purses is funded by Virginia racing interests.
As previously announced, the Maryland Million, with purses of $1 million, is set for Oct. 24.
There will be a pair of $100,000 2-year-old stakes Nov. 14, followed by six $100,000 stakes Nov. 28, the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend. Two $100,000 stakes for Maryland-bred 2-year-olds—the Maryland Juvenile and Maryland Filly Juvenile—will be run Dec. 5.
The stakes season concludes Dec. 26 with a loaded eight-stakes program valued at roughly $850,000. Among them is the $150,000, Grade III Allaire DuPont, an even for fillies and mares normally held during Preakness week in May.
