Details On Transition To Laurel Discussed

A community meeting sponsored by the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association provided insights and important information regarding the movement of people, horses and property from Pimlico Race Course to Laurel Park in advance of the Sept. 1 closure of Pimlico for training activities.

“We’re doing our best to make sure everyone is taken care of,” said Corey Johnsen, the Interim Chief Executive Officer for the Maryland Thoroughbred Racetrack Operating Authority, which takes over racing operations from The Stronach Group (1/ST Racing) Jan. 1, 2025. “It will be handled in a respectful manner. There is nothing more important than the people who care for the horses.”

The Maryland Jockey Club and MTHA months ago began working closly together to identify Pimlico-based backstretch employees who plan to work at Laurel in order to provide sufficient living quarters. Anne Arundel County officials have signed off on having two people per dormitory room after site visits and inspections, and the MJC is encouraging family, friends and co-workers to double up. Individuals with special circumstances will be permitted to live alone on a case-by-case basis.

Johnsen indicated there is ongoing consideration of utilizing limited off-site housing in proximity of Laurel Park should it be necessary. He said the move needs to be managed properly while being mindful of costs.

Major Mike Singletary, MJC Vice President of Security, said dumpsters will be placed near barns at both racetracks so trainers and employees can dispose of excess property no longer needed. The MJC will provide and fund van shuttle service at Pimlico for the transport of horses and property, he said, and all trailers parked at Laurel will require a sticker that can be obtained from the MTHA racetrack office at Laurel Park.

Given the Sept. 1 deadline, Singletary urged everyone to plan ahead because people and horses will be moving during the Maryland State Fair at Timonium meet. “We want to make this transition and move as smooth as possible,” he said.

MJC Stable Manager Terry Overmeier said stalls at Laurel are ready to accept horses from Pimlico, and that MJC initially will bed the stalls for those moving in. She also said sheds currently located at Pimlico will be moved to Laurel.
