The Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association’s expanded recreation program for backstretch workers continues to grow in popularity, with a full schedule of on-site and off-site events planned for the month of May at Laurel Park and beyond.

Since Bryant Paz, operator of the track kitchen, took over the coordination of activities last year, the program has seen increased participation and positive feedback. At its April meeting, the MTHA Board of Directors praised the success and impact of the initiative.

With warmer weather on the horizon, the focus will shift to activities that encourage fresh air and community bonding—from softball games and volleyball matches to group cookouts, fishing trips, and visits to regional attractions. These events are meant to provide meaningful breaks from the demanding schedules and physically intensive work that define life on the backstretch.
