Laurel Park Suspends Weekend Racing Pending Surface Review
Laurel Park has canceled live racing programs scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 23, and Sunday, Nov. 24, following the cancellation of Friday’s races after jockeys raised concerns about the condition of the dirt surface.
The Maryland Jockey Club (MJC) has announced that training will remain available on Saturday and Sunday but will be limited to gallopers and joggers only.
As a precautionary measure, the MJC has suspended racing until a third-party review of the track surface can be conducted. This review will be carried out by the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA), whose representatives are scheduled to inspect the surface on the morning of Monday, Nov. 25.
Three stakes races originally slated for Saturday, Nov. 23—the Willa On The Move, Dave’s Friend, and Richard W. Small—have been rescheduled as “extra races” for Friday, Nov. 29. Entries for these rescheduled stakes close on Saturday, Nov. 23.
MJC, MTHA and MTROA are committed to maintaining the highest safety standards for horses and riders and appreciates the understanding and cooperation of all stakeholders as this evaluation is undertaken.
