Longtime Maryland Owner Herman Braude Passes

Herman Braude, a longtime Thoroughbred owner who raced horses on his own and in partnership in Maryland, passed away Feb. 28. He was 85.

Braude was born in Brooklyn, New York City, and was a graduate of the Georgetown University Law Center. A resident of Rockville, Md., Braude was recognized as one of the preeminent construction and government contract attorneys in the United States.

Over the past 25 years in the racing business, horses owned by Braude won 188 races for earnings of more than $3 million. He also won more than 50 races in partnerships including those with Hidden Hills Farm, No Guts No Glory Farm and Team Gaudet.

Braude was active in the claiming game and frequently attended the races to watch his horses run.

“He was a friend for more than 40 years,” said Linda Gaudet. “He loved racing and loved having a big winner. He loved to wager on the races.”

Braude was married to his wife, Marcey, for 63 years. He was the father of a daughter, Sherrie, and two sons, Brett and Darren. He has eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held March 2 at Judean Memorial Gardens in Olney, Md.
