Maryland Thoroughbred Community Mourns the Passing of Bill Reightler

The Maryland Thoroughbred community has lost one of its most respected and accomplished horsemen with the passing of Bill Reightler, who died Tuesday following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 72.

For more than four decades, Reightler dedicated his life to the Thoroughbred industry, earning widespread admiration as a horseman, farm manager, bloodstock agent, mentor, and trusted advisor. His knowledge of pedigrees, horsemanship, and the commercial marketplace made him one of the Mid-Atlantic’s most influential figures.

A lifelong Marylander, Reightler began his career as a trainer before expanding his expertise through management positions at Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky, Ross Valley Farms, and Chanceland Farm. In 1999, he established Bill Reightler Bloodstock, building one of the region’s premier bloodstock agencies over the next 27 years.

Throughout his career, Reightler played a role in the success of numerous outstanding Thoroughbreds. His accomplishments included selling 2021 Horse of the Year Knicks Go, whose mating he also planned, as well as Eclipse Award Champion Declan’s Moon. His keen eye for pedigrees and conformation helped shape the careers of countless horses and earned the trust of owners and breeders throughout North America.

Beyond his professional achievements, Bill was known for his integrity, generosity, and willingness to help others. Whether assisting first-time owners or advising longtime breeders, he approached every relationship with honesty, humility, and an unwavering passion for the horse. His mentorship left a lasting impact on generations of horsemen and women across Maryland and beyond.

The Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association extends its deepest condolences to Bill’s wife, Barrie, daughter Betsy, and the entire Reightler family during this difficult time. His contributions to Maryland racing and breeding helped strengthen the industry he loved, and his legacy will continue through the many people and horses whose lives he touched.

A celebration of life will be held for Reightler Aug. 23 at Comer's Pond, 3512 Green Road, White Hall, Md., 21161. She instructed attendees to bring a dish to share, and in lieu of flowers, donations in Bill's name can be made to the Maryland Horse Foundation.
