MTHA Reminds Horsemen of Trainer Benefit Trust Fund Support

The Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association (MTHA) is reminding trainers and their families of the meaningful support available through the Trainer Benefit Trust Fund, one of the organization’s longstanding and most impactful programs.
Established as part of the MTHA’s founding mission, the Benefit Trust Fund provides limited financial assistance for medical and dental expenses to eligible trainers and their spouses. The program reflects a core principle shared by horsemen’s organizations nationwide—ensuring that those who dedicate their lives to the care and training of Thoroughbreds have access to support when they need it most.
The MTHA’s Benefit Trust is widely regarded as one of the most robust programs of its kind in the country and continues to be authorized annually by the MTHA Board of Directors.
Program eligibility is open to currently licensed trainers and their spouses. Eligible trainers must be currently stabled at Laurel Park or Pimlico Race Course and may be subject to a minimum requirement of 10 starts in Maryland for at least one year prior to the request, with a majority of those starts occurring in Maryland. Eligibility is subject to review by the MTHA’s Health & Welfare Committee.
Under the program, trainers receive a $50 deductible per bill with 90% coverage of the remaining balance, up to a maximum benefit of $7,500 per calendar year. Spouses of trainers receive a $50 deductible per bill with 50% coverage of the remaining balance, up to a maximum benefit of $5,000 per calendar year.
To participate, applicants must provide documentation of medical or dental bills. Assistance is paid directly to the healthcare provider, and no reimbursement is issued directly to the individual.
The Trainer Benefit Trust Fund continues to serve as a critical safety net for Maryland horsemen, providing meaningful support during times of need. The MTHA encourages all eligible trainers to remain aware of this benefit and to utilize it when necessary.
