Shamrock Farm Training Center Taking Shape

Sunday, July 6, 2025

The long-envisioned Shamrock Farm Training Center is beginning to take form, as representatives from Populous, the Maryland Stadium Authority (MSA), and the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association (MTHA) continue collaborative efforts to design and plan the future state-of-the-art facility in Carroll County.

Populous, the internationally renowned architectural firm known for designing sports and entertainment venues around the world including Oriole Park at Camden Yards and M&T Bank Stadium in downtown Baltimore, has been working closely with MSA and MTHA to develop a layout that not only meets the needs of the modern Thoroughbred trainer but also reflects the traditions and demands of Maryland racing.

Design sessions have focused on key components essential for a high-functioning training environment, including a dirt training surface, a modern barn area, dormitories for backstretch workers, and support infrastructure designed to promote horse safety and long-term sustainability.

“This is an opportunity to build something that will serve Maryland’s racing community for generations,” said MTHA Executive Director David Richardson. “We’re proud to be part of the planning process and are focused on making sure the facility supports the day-to-day realities of our trainers, horsemen, and workers.”

Located on the former grounds of the iconic Shamrock Farm, the site’s rural setting and open acreage make it an ideal location for a thoughtfully designed, modern training complex that complements racing operations at Laurel Park and Pimlico.

The property is currently in the final stages of purchase by the State of Maryland, with the sale from the Rooney family expected to be completed in July. Once finalized, the site will officially become the home of the new training center—marking a major milestone in the broader revitalization of Maryland racing infrastructure.

As the design phase progresses, MTHA continues to provide input to ensure the facility reflects the practical needs of Maryland horsemen while aligning with broader goals for industry stability and growth.

More updates will be shared as planning milestones are reached and the project moves closer to becoming a reality.
