Special Measurement Gauges Heat
To ensure equine health and safety, the Maryland Jockey Club (MJC) now uses the WetBulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) measurement to determine when summer heat becomes dangerous. This advanced protocol considers temperature, humidity, wind speed, sun angle, and cloud cover, providing a more accurate assessment of heat stress than the traditional heat index.
MJC Acting President Mike Rogers emphasized the importance of this method. “The WBGT is used by all major sports, the military, and the Fédération Equestre Internationale for assessing heat exposure risks,” Rogers explained. “It’s not just about temperature—95 degrees in direct sunlight feels different from the same temperature in the shade.”
If the WBGT measurement reaches 91.4, MJC will cancel racing to protect the horses. This proactive approach reflects MJC’s commitment to equine welfare and aligns with international standards.
As the summer continues, MJC will closely monitor conditions using the WBGT to make informed decisions about racing schedules. The Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association (MTHA) supports these measures to ensure a safe and healthy environment for Maryland racing.
