Stop Improper Wastewater Disposal on the Backstretch at Laurel Park

We need your immediate cooperation to address a growing environmental concern. The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) has issued strict guidelines regarding the disposal of wastewater on the backstretch, particularly concerning the hosing down of asphalt and concrete surfaces. This practice can lead to serious environmental repercussions and potential penalties for non-compliance.

When wastewater, often containing harmful chemicals, manure, and other contaminants, is washed off onto asphalt and concrete surfaces, it can seep into the storm drains and eventually make its way into local waterways. This can lead to pollution of our rivers, streams, and Chesapeake Bay, harming aquatic life and the broader ecosystem.

The MDE has made it clear that improper disposal of wastewater is a violation of state environmental regulations. As members of the Maryland racing community, it is our responsibility to adhere to these regulations and protect our natural resources.

Repeated violations of these regulations will result in penalties being assessed and other sanctions on individuals or organizations that fail to comply with wastewater disposal guidelines.

What You Can Do

To avoid penalties and contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment, we urge you to take the following actions:

 1.   Stop Hosing Down Surfaces: Refrain from hosing down asphalt and concrete surfaces on the backstretch. Instead, use designated wash areas that are properly equipped to handle wastewater disposal.

 2.   Educate Your Team: Ensure that all members of your team are aware of the regulations and understand the importance of proper wastewater management.

 3.   Report Issues: If you notice any improper disposal practices, report them immediately to prevent further MDE involvement and avoid penalties.
