TMJC Board Shares Strong Spring Momentum and Fan Engagement Success

Wednesday, April 29, 2026

The Maryland Jockey Club Board of Directors is pleased to share a series of updates reflecting the continued momentum of the 2026 spring meet, highlighted by strong on-track performance, growing fan engagement, and a number of innovative initiatives designed to elevate the racing experience across Maryland. From nationally recognized events and competitive race cards to new fan-focused programming and expanded opportunities beyond Laurel Park, the organization remains focused on building a vibrant, sustainable future for the sport. The following highlights underscore the positive trajectory of Maryland racing as the industry moves toward the Preakness and the broader summer season:

National Thoroughbred League Returns to Maryland

Maryland will once again serve as a host site for the National Thoroughbred League (NTL) on Kentucky Derby Day at Laurel Park, highlighted by the involvement of Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson and a nationally promoted, team-based racing format designed to attract new fans.

Beyond the added visibility, the event is part of a strategic framework that is a first step to enhance Maryland racing through expanded promotion, sponsorship development, and increased wagering engagement. Under the current operating model, Maryland retains the exclusive right to organize, host, and promote premier racing content—including nationally recognized events—while leveraging intellectual property, media exposure, and sponsorship opportunities to drive growth.

For horsemen, this translates into meaningful benefits, including greater national exposure for horses, owners, trainers, and jockeys competing in Maryland while eliminating the contribution of handle for these races as in 2025. The emphasis on telecast distribution, integrated marketing, and fan engagement initiatives helps expand the reach of Maryland racing across multiple platforms, ultimately supporting purse growth and sustainability.

The NTL event represents a unique step forward—blending sport and entertainment while reinforcing Maryland’s position within the broader racing landscape and creating new opportunities for the horsemen who power it.

Strong Performance for “Preakness Preview Day”

For the second consecutive year, Preakness Preview Day delivered impressive results, generating more than $5.4 million in total handle.

The 12-race program on April 18 featured 107 starters, averaging 8.9 horses per race, reflecting strong participation and competitive fields.

The card was highlighted by Taj Mahal’s dominant victory in the $150,000 Federico Tesio Stakes, earning an automatic berth into the Preakness Stakes through the “Win Today, See You in May” program.

Morning Workouts Show Debuts to Strong Reception

The inaugural Morning Workouts Show proved to be a resounding success, offering fans a behind-the-scenes look at morning training along with opportunities to meet jockeys and trainers.

The next event—scheduled for Saturday, May 9 from 8:00–10:00 AM—is already sold out, underscoring the strong demand for fan engagement experiences. Attendees will enjoy access to the paddock and winner’s circle, jockey autograph sessions, and a family-friendly breakfast offering.

The following Morning Workouts Show is scheduled for June 13.

Mother’s Day Buffet at Laurel Park

A longtime Maryland Jockey Club tradition returns with the Mother’s Day Buffet on Sunday, May 10 at Laurel Park.

Tickets are now available, and the event continues to be a popular option for families looking to enjoy live racing alongside a special holiday experience.

Fair Hill Turf Showcase Tickets Now Available

Tickets are now on sale for the upcoming Fair Hill Turf Showcase, part of the Maryland Jockey Club’s ongoing efforts to expand and elevate racing opportunities across the state while highlighting Maryland’s unique racing assets.

Set for Memorial Day weekend at the scenic Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area, the Showcase will feature a special all-turf Thoroughbred program designed to take advantage of Fair Hill’s world-class grass course. The event will be conducted under the Maryland Jockey Club banner with our staff, with purses provided through the Maryland program and full wagering opportunities available, ensuring meaningful participation for horsemen while delivering a distinctive racing experience for fans.

The Sunday card will showcase a full slate of turf racing, offering a change of pace from the traditional Laurel Park program and creating new opportunities for horses that excel on grass.

Beyond the racing itself, the Fair Hill Turf Showcase is designed as a fan-friendly, outdoor experience—combining high-quality competition with a relaxed, open setting that encourages new audiences to engage with the sport. The event reflects a broader strategic initiative to diversify Maryland’s racing footprint, maximize the use of its facilities, and create fresh, marketable experiences that benefit both fans and horsemen.

Horsemen and fans are encouraged to visit LaurelPark.com/fhts for additional details, ticket information, and event updates.

The Maryland Jockey Club remains committed to building momentum across all aspects of the racing program—from on-track product to fan engagement—and appreciates the continued support and participation of Maryland’s horsemen.
