Backstretch Heroes Save Jockey Agent Simon Purdy

The Maryland racing community showed its true character Thursday morning, September 25, when quick action from horsemen and officials likely saved the life of jockey agent Simon Purdy on the backstretch at Laurel Park.

Purdy had been engaged in a casual conversation with trainer Carlos Mancilla and jockey Johan Rosado trackside during training when he suddenly remarked that he wasn’t feeling well. Moments later, he collapsed into Mancilla’s arms, turning pale and unresponsive.

Mancilla immediately called for help and began resuscitation efforts. Within moments, Maryland Jockey Club Compliance and Safety Officer Tim Tullock arrived and urgently administered CPR until an ambulance reached the scene. Tullock’s decisive and sustained response was critical in reviving Purdy and keeping him stable until medical personnel could take over.

Other horsemen quickly joined in, including trainer Jose Corrales and jockey Victor Carrasco, who is represented by Purdy. Their combined efforts were crucial in bringing him back. Thanks to the speed, skill, and teamwork of everyone involved, Purdy regained consciousness before being transported by ambulance to UM Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie. Reports indicated he was expected to make a full recovery, and he was discharged later that same day.

Trainer Carlos Mancilla reflected on the experience:

“If everyone wouldn’t have acted so quickly then it’s my fear that Simon wouldn’t have made it today. This really is a great community that comes together when things like this happen.”

Carrasco added:

“(Tim) Tullock, (Carlos) Mancilla and Jose (Corrales) were MVPs today. It’s amazing what they did to save Simon.”

Carassco later reported that he was at the hospital with Purdy, who was released after undergoing some tests. "Everything is fine," he said. "He's good. We're all very grateful."

This frightening moment became a powerful reminder of the strength, unity, and humanity of Maryland’s backstretch community. The MTHA commends all who stepped forward in a moment of crisis and recognizes them as true heroes.
