Connecting Maryland’s Backstretch Community to Essential Services and Everyday Needs
Reliable transportation is essential to maintaining quality of life, yet many backstretch workers face challenges accessing shopping, appointments, community resources, and recreational opportunities. To help meet those needs, the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association operates the MTHA Express, a free transportation service available to currently licensed backstretch employees working at Laurel Park and Pimlico.
The MTHA Express is an 11-passenger van that provides regularly scheduled trips throughout the week, connecting horsemen with essential services, shopping destinations, and community activities both on and off the racetrack. The service is operated by MTHA Recreation Director Dan Mangum and serves as an important resource for individuals who may not have access to personal transportation.
