Horsemen’s Health System
Bringing Quality Healthcare Directly to Maryland’s Racing Community
The Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association (MTHA), in partnership with The Maryland Jockey Club (TMJC) and MedStar Health, is proud to provide on-track medical services through the Horsemen’s Health System, an innovative healthcare program designed specifically for Maryland’s racing industry.
For more than a decade, this partnership has ensured that jockeys, trainers, backstretch workers, stable employees, and TMJC staff have convenient access to professional medical care directly at the racetrack. By bringing healthcare services to the workplace, the program helps eliminate barriers to care and ensures that those who dedicate their lives to the sport have access to timely medical attention.
MedStar Health physicians are present on live racing days at Maryland Thoroughbred racetracks, typically beginning at 11:30 a.m. and remaining on-site through the conclusion of racing. The medical team is available to evaluate injuries, provide treatment, coordinate follow-up care, and address a wide range of healthcare concerns for members of the racing community.
Since its inception, the Horsemen’s Health System has served hundreds of patients and established medical records for more than 800 individuals, providing an invaluable healthcare resource to Maryland horsemen and racetrack employees.
In addition to providing direct medical services, MedStar physicians play an important role in supporting jockey health and safety initiatives. The medical team works closely with the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) through its HeadCheck program, helping jockeys maintain required medical records, complete annual physical examinations, and comply with national health and safety standards.
The Horsemen’s Health System reflects the MTHA’s ongoing commitment to the well-being of Maryland’s horsemen. By investing in accessible, high-quality healthcare, the program helps ensure that the men and women who make Maryland racing possible receive the care and support they deserve.
