Purse Protection & Retirement
Supporting Aftercare and Protecting the Future of Maryland Racing
The Maryland Purse Protection & Retirement Program was established by the MTHA Board of Directors to advance two important priorities for Maryland horsemen: providing meaningful support for Thoroughbred aftercare and protecting the long-term interests of the state’s racing industry.
Created in 2013, the program provides a dedicated funding source for equine retirement initiatives, including support for Beyond The Wire, Maryland’s nationally recognized Thoroughbred aftercare program. The program also helps fund the Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Political Action Committee (PAC), which advocates for policies and legislation that strengthen and preserve Maryland racing.
The program is funded through a modest per-start deduction from owners’ Horsemen’s Accounts for every horse that competes in a Maryland race. These contributions are specifically earmarked to support Thoroughbred aftercare efforts and industry advocacy initiatives that benefit Maryland horsemen and the sport as a whole.
By combining support for retired racehorses with efforts to protect the future of the industry, the Purse Protection & Retirement Program reflects Maryland horsemen’s commitment to responsible stewardship, industry leadership, and the long-term success of Thoroughbred racing in the state.
